An American expat who owns a surf shop in Zihuatanejo was attacked by a shark on Saturday Night. Grimes, the American attacked, was out in the water with a couple of other surfers in the dark, choppy waters when he something lift his board. Grimes continued with five more strokes before the sharks sharp teeth found and dug into Grimes arm. What occurred next seemed out of the movies, “Shark!” Grimes screamed while he was wrestling his arm back. Grimes quickly swam back to shore and only suffered a few gashes. An interview given to him after the incident Grime said “There wasn’t any time to panic,” All he was thinking of was “don’t want to die. Don’t want to lose my arm.” Grimes located in Zihuatanejo was lucky to only escape with a few gashes because Zihuatanejo and many other Mexico coast have seen an increase in shark attacks.

Only in the past month there have been 2 deaths. A 66 year old surfer was killed by a shark at Solana Beach, Calif. The average shark or fatal shark attacks each year around the world is estimated to be four fatal shark attacks per year. Only one has been recorded outside Mexico.

Zihuatanejo has not only seen an increase in Shark attacks. A night before Grimes encounter with a shark a 19 year old Florida native surfer also encounter a shark. Unlike Grimes the attack was fatal leaving the Florida Native dead within the water. Less then a month before this incident a visitor from San Francisco was also killed in a shark attack in Mexico.

Scientist are puzzled on this resent increase in Shark attacks because areas such as Zihuatanejo, Mexico have never witnessed shark attacks before. You are better dieing driving to the beach rather then swimming in the water. Marine Biologist Chris Lowe who runs a shark lab said there is little officials can do beyond warning people against going into the water while Scientist study what has caused the shark population in Mexico to become aggressive. Zihuatanejo and other Parts of Mexico see local fisherman hunting larger sharks to decrease the chances of attacks but scientist say this does little to help.

Grimes on the other hand has recently, only 6 months, opened a surf shop after he has visited the area for 25 years. This recent increase in shark attacks might decrease tourist or surfers from wanting to surf thus hindering his business.
